“As inspiration for the project, we looked at the book-lover’s paradise; the library. (...) we set out to design a contemporary and more minimalist version, where all the books are still displayed in a warm and stimulating atmosphere. ” - Norm Architects
In Copenhagen’s historic Ny Østergade, New Mags has unveiled its flagship store, an embodiment of minimalism and curated beauty. Designed by Norm Architects, this concept store offers a space where design, books, and art intersect, creating an immersive experience that invites visitors into a world of curated coffee table books, magazines, and collectibles.
Upon entering the store, a sense of calm and serenity envelops visitors. Inspired by the timeless atmosphere of traditional libraries, the design allows the books to take center stage, presented not merely as items to be browsed but as artworks in their own right. Shelved alongside selected sculptures and objects, the books become the protagonists in this dynamic space, celebrating the meaningful and the beautiful in all their forms. Natural materials, including oak wood and golden sandstone, frame the space, creating a tranquil backdrop that encourages reflection and exploration. These materials not only contribute to the aesthetic beauty but also embody New Mags' commitment to timeless, high-quality design.
The store’s architecture intersects function and form. Wooden panels, made from oak veneer, line the walls and echo the classic wooden landscapes of libraries, creating vertical divisions that define the space. These panels also serve to break up the expansive space, providing a more intimate, inviting atmosphere. The panels are multifunctional; pivoting sections of the wall reveal a hidden office space at the back of the store. This adaptable feature allows the space to shift between a retail environment and a more introverted setting, offering a corner for customers to enjoy the books without distractions or to serve as a temporary workplace or meeting area. Sculptural elements, like a stone piece by Josephine Winding, offer a soft contrast to the architectural precision of the wooden panels, adding variety to the space’s texture and height.
The design seamlessly integrates the retail experience with the company’s philosophy, providing a minimalist, adaptable and fluid space. New Mags’ flagship store is more than just a retail space—it is a celebration of art, design, and literature. Through Norm Architects' thoughtful design, the store offers a quiet, contemplative sanctuary where the love of books is paired with a deep appreciation for architecture and timeless aesthetics.
