Three-Minute Read

Vitra Campus brings together some of the world’s most influential architects and designers, transforming a former factory site into a curated landscape where architecture, design, and nature coexist.

Located in Weil am Rhein, just a few minutes from the Swiss border, Vitra Campus offers a unique architectural journey. What began as a reconstruction project after a factory fire in 1981 has grown into one of the most significant collections of contemporary architecture.

The campus features signature works by renowned architects such as Frank Gehry, Tadao Ando, Herzog & de Meuron, SANAA, Zaha Hadid, Kazuo Shinohara, Renzo Piano, Álvaro Siza, and landscape designer Piet Oudolf.

Frank Gehry’s Vitra Design Museum, completed in 1989, marked the beginning of this architectural dialogue. His sculptural white forms introduced a dynamic visual language, becoming Gehry’s first realized project in Europe. Shortly after, Nicholas Grimshaw contributed a functional yet flexible production hall with its high-tech steel structure.

Tadao Ando’s Conference Pavilion adds a layer of calm, with exposed concrete surfaces, precise geometry, and controlled light creating a meditative interior atmosphere. Álvaro Siza’s factory building follows with understated elegance, combining white plastered facades with subtle color details.

Herzog & de Meuron’s VitraHaus reinterprets the archetype of the house, stacking volumes to create a distinctive showroom for Vitra’s Home Collection. Their Schaudepot, a simple brick structure, houses one of the most extensive chair collections in the world. SANAA’s Factory Building offers a light, almost disappearing presence with its flowing aluminum facade, blending seamlessly with its surroundings. Zaha Hadid’s Fire Station — her first completed building — introduces dynamic concrete forms, capturing motion and sharp spatial tension.

Kazuo Shinohara’s Pavilion brings in Japanese sensibility, where simplicity, emptiness, and spatial balance create an atmosphere of quiet presence. The entire campus is framed by Piet Oudolf’s garden design, where seasonal planting softens the architectural forms and connects the buildings through constantly shifting natural textures.

Vitra Campus is not only a workplace or exhibition space — it is a curated platform where multiple architectural voices engage in an ongoing conversation. Each structure offers its own atmosphere, while together they create a continuous spatial experience shaped by some of the most influential minds in architecture and design.
